ETO Sterilization Chamber

ETO Sterilization Chamber

ETO (ethylene oxide) sterilization chambers are sealed containers that use low-temperature ethylene oxide (EO) gas to sterilize heat- and moisture-sensitive medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and other materials. These sterilization chambers use a vacuum system to introduce ethylene oxide (EO) gas, which penetrates the packaging and product surfaces, killing microorganisms by disrupting cell growth processes. Critical parameters for successful sterilization include gas concentration, humidity, temperature, and time.

Features

How it works

Preparation: The sterilization chamber is sealed and loaded with items to be sterilized.

Pre-vacuum: Air is removed from the chamber to prepare it for gas.

Pre-humidification: The items are humidified to a specific level, as humidity is critical to the effectiveness of EO gas.

Gas introduction: EO gas (usually mixed with an inert gas such as carbon dioxide) is introduced into the chamber.

Sterilization cycle: The sterilization chamber maintains a specific concentration, humidity, and temperature for a specified period of time. Ethylene oxide (EO) gas acts as an alkylating agent, disrupting microbial metabolism.

Aeration: After the cycle, any remaining EO gas is removed and the chamber is purged with air (sometimes multiple times) to ensure that no hazardous gases remain.

Features

1. Low-Temperature Sterilization
ETO sterilizers typically operate at temperatures between 30°C and 55°C, with a maximum temperature not exceeding 58°C. They can safely sterilize heat-sensitive materials such as plastic medical devices, rubber products, and precision electronic components.
2. High Penetration
Ethylene oxide gas has excellent penetration, penetrating deep into complex structures, multi-lumen catheters, and internal crevices for comprehensive sterilization.

3. Broad-Spectrum Efficacy
Ethylene oxide effectively kills a wide range of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and highly resistant spores, providing reliable sterilization.

FAQ

1. What is the operating temperature range of an ETO sterilization chamber? Why is this temperature range beneficial for certain items?
The operating temperature range of an ETO sterilization chamber typically ranges from 25°C to 65°C, with the upper temperature typically set below 58°C. This low temperature range is advantageous because it allows for gentle processing of heat-sensitive items such as plastic medical devices, certain rubber products, and delicate electronic components. Unlike high-temperature sterilization methods like steam sterilization, it avoids damaging these materials, preserving their physical and chemical properties. This is particularly important for products with complex geometries or multiple materials, such as implantable devices with integrated electronics.

2. How does the high permeability of EO gas in an ETO sterilization chamber benefit the sterilization process?
EO gas has excellent permeability, allowing it to easily reach complex areas such as narrow lumens and intricate structures, and even penetrate common packaging materials such as paper, plastic film, and cartons. This ensures comprehensive sterilization of all surfaces, including the interior of multi-lumen tubing.

3. What types of microorganisms can ETO sterilizers effectively kill? Why is this so important in the medical field?
ETO sterilizers effectively kill a wide range of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and even highly resistant spores. This is crucial in the medical field because it ensures the safety of medical products by reducing the risk of microbial contamination. For example, it can sterilize injection vials, ensuring that they are free of harmful microorganisms, which is crucial for patient safety.
