Eto Ethylene Oxide

ETO ethylene oxide, is a colorless gas at normal conditions. It has a boiling point just above room temperature, around 10.4 °C. This low boiling point makes it easy to convert into a gas, which is crucial for its applications. It has a sweet, ether - like smell.​

In the medical field, ETO is a workhorse for sterilization. Heat - sensitive medical devices like endoscopes, syringes made of certain plastics, and implantable devices are often sterilized with ETO. The gas can penetrate deep into the tiniest crevices of these items. It attacks the DNA and proteins of bacteria, viruses, and spores, rendering them unable to reproduce. About half of all sterile medical devices globally are sterilized using ETO.​

The pharmaceutical industry also depends on ETO. It sterilizes drug - manufacturing equipment and packaging materials. By ensuring these are microbe - free, ETO helps maintain the quality and safety of medications. It can work on a wide range of materials, from glass vials to plastic blister packs.​​
